I’m a big fan of ‘boro’, which is an ancient Japanese technique, used by peasants to enable them to use up every last scrap of precious fabric. It involved layering up scraps of fabric to cover holes and to re-inforce fabric and the result is a wonderful patchwork effect.

I’ve done a very informal kind of boro on my jeans, adding a new patch as new holes form, in an attempt to keep the jeans going for the whole of my no new clothes year:
